Homemade Taco Seasoning Mix

Mixing up your own taco seasoning is such a cinch I recommend everyone do it! I don’t know why I haven’t done a post about it before now since I’ve been making my own seasoning mix for years.

Sometimes you get a hankering for a taco and you don’t have any of those packets on hand. . . that’s how I started making my own. A trip to the store just to buy a packet of spices that I already have in my own cupboard didn’t seem smart. What a complete waste of time. And money.

You can tweak it to suit your own tastes. Maybe you like more chili powder or don’t like oregano in it. . . you can use this as a starting point to make your own personalized mix.

I usually double or triple this recipe being it will last for a while in a tightly covered glass jar.

Homemade Taco Seasoning Mix

Mixing up your own taco seasoning is such a cinch I recommend everyone do it. Not only is it a money-saver but you don't have to worry about running out of those packets.

Ingredients

2 tablespoons chile powder
2 teaspoons corn starch
2 teaspoons Mexican oregano
1 + 1/2 teaspoons onion powder
1 teaspoon sweet or smoked paprika
1 teaspoon ground cumin
1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
1 teaspoon coarse salt or 1/2 teaspoon fine/table salt
1/4 teaspoon black pepper
1/2 teaspoon cayenne pepper or red pepper flakes, optional

Instructions

  1. Combine all the seasonings together in a jar and shake until well mixed.
  2. Use 2 tablespoons (I use 2 rounded) seasoning mix for every pound of ground beef plus 1/2 - 2/3 cup water.
  3. You can tweak the seasoning to suit your own tastes. I went easy on the salt so you can salt and pepper to taste.

I have all of these individual spices in my kitchen but still bought seasoning packets because I didn’t have a recipe to do it myself. Now I do! Thanks, Reeni!

What does the corn starch do? Can you use regular paprika?

    • Reeni says:

You can use regular paprika! The corn starch thickens it and helps the spices stick to the meat!

  4. Tacos are definitely my favorite food, so I’m suprised I’ve never thought to make up my own seasoning. I’ve been buying taco seasoning in bulk at Sam’s Club for years… :-S This sounds super delicious

This has got to be a million times better than any taco seasoning you could get in a package.
