Homemade Taco Seasoning Mix

Mixing up your own taco seasoning is such a cinch I recommend everyone do it! I don’t know why I haven’t done a post about it before now since I’ve been making my own seasoning mix for years.

Sometimes you get a hankering for a taco and you don’t have any of those packets on hand. . . that’s how I started making my own. A trip to the store just to buy a packet of spices that I already have in my own cupboard didn’t seem smart. What a complete waste of time. And money.

You can tweak it to suit your own tastes. Maybe you like more chili powder or don’t like oregano in it. . . you can use this as a starting point to make your own personalized mix.

I usually double or triple this recipe being it will last for a while in a tightly covered glass jar.

Homemade Taco Seasoning Mix

Mixing up your own taco seasoning is such a cinch I recommend everyone do it. Not only is it a money-saver but you don't have to worry about running out of those packets.

2 tablespoons chili powder
2 teaspoons corn starch
2 teaspoons Mexican oregano
1 + 1/2 teaspoons onion powder
1 teaspoon sweet or smoked paprika
1 teaspoon ground cumin
1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
1 teaspoon coarse salt or 1/2 teaspoon fine/table salt
1/4 teaspoon black pepper
1/2 teaspoon cayenne pepper or red pepper flakes, optional

  1. Combine all the seasonings together in a jar and shake until well mixed.
  2. Use 2 tablespoons (I use 2 rounded) seasoning mix for every pound of ground beef plus 1/2 - 2/3 cup water.
  3. You can tweak the seasoning to suit your own tastes. I went easy on the salt so you can salt and pepper to taste.

My 4 yr old is allergic to oregano… Is there something similar I can replace it with? Thanks!

Hi Tiffany! You can just leave it out and it will be fine! The taco packets you buy don’t usually have oregano in them but I like the flavor it adds. It will still be flavorful without it!

I’ve been doing the same thing for years, and this is very close to my own combination, though I used dried minced onions. Corn starch will work, and in such a small amount, this won’t make a huge difference, but I use instant potato flakes in my mix, it lends the same thickness without the gelling, and most commercial taco mixes list potato starch as an ingredient.

I see these mixes all of the time and the one thing that all of them seem to be missing is corn starch. That is the secret ingredient and what makes the meat “saucy” once cooked. Great call on your part.

We love tacos but I find most seasonings too salty and since I don’t like the taste of salt I’m certainly going to make sure we have some of yours on hand!

Oh your good! Tacos are a religion here about once a week (daughter and husband adore them). Love that I have everything in the house for it. And I’m not dependent on lots of sodium and MSG.
