Garlic Bread Crusted Gnocchi Mac & Cheese

Gnocchi meets mac & cheese meets garlic bread in this Italian-American fusion of flavors.

It’s a meal in one that starts with a layer of fat, pillowy gnocchi smothered in a decadent three cheese sauce and topped with homemade garlic bread croutons. The end.

The super thick and creamy sauce is made mostly of white cheddar with mozzarella and Parmesan. There’s plenty of it to go around as the bottom of the croutons soak up some of the sauce while the tops turn golden and crunchy.

It’s a lovely bite with soft, cloud-like gnocchi offset by crispy bread. Plus the garlic brings a lot of flavor to the party.

Garlic Bread Crusted Gnocchi Mac & Cheese

Gnocchi meets mac & cheese meets garlic bread in this Italian-American fusion of flavors.


Garlic Bread:
6 - 7 (1/2-inch thick) slices of Italian bread
2 tablespoons melted butter
1 tablespoon olive oil
2 cloves garlic, minced
dash of salt and pepper
Mac & Cheese:
16 - 17 ounces of gnocchi, ricotta or plain
2 tablespoons butter
2 cloves garlic, minced
2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
2 cups whole milk
1 teaspoon Dijon mustard
dash or two of nutmeg
1/2 teaspoon coarse salt
1/8 teaspoon black pepper
2 cups shredded white cheddar cheese
1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
1/3 cup grated Parmesan cheese + 2 tablespoons, divided
fresh chopped parsley or basil, for garnish


  1. Preheat oven to 375 degrees F. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper and place the bread on it.
  2. In a small bowl mix the butter, olive oil and garlic together with a couple dashes of salt and pepper. Brush generously over the tops of the bread, if you have butter leftover flip the bread over and brush the other side. Bake 7 - 8 minutes. Remove from oven and when cool enough to handle cut into 1/2-inch cubes.
  3. Cook the gnocchi according to package directions. Grease an 8 x 10 or similar sized casserole dish. Preheat oven to 400 degrees F.
  4. Meanwhile make the sauce:
  5. In a medium sauce pan set over medium-low heat melt the butter, add garlic and cook 1- 2 minutes, stirring often. Stir in the flour and cook 3 minute stirring often. Slowly stir in the milk then the Dijon, nutmeg, salt and pepper. Turn heat up to medium-high and bring to a boil, maintain a simmer and cook 3 minutes, whisking often.
  6. Stir in the cheddar, mozzarella and 1/3 cup Parmesan - whisk often until melted. Remove from heat.
  7. Once the gnocchi are cooked, drain and spread over the bottom of the casserole dish. Pour the cheese sauce over top then cover with the garlic bread. Press down on the garlic bread gently.
  8. Sprinkle the 2 tablespoons of Parmesan cheese over the bread along with any crumbs from cutting up the bread.
  9. Bake 25 minutes until bubbly and golden. If the garlic bread starts to darken to much cover with aluminum foil. Allow to set 5 minutes before serving. Sprinkle with fresh herbs to serve.
