You only need four ingredients to make apple pie spice at home – a useful recipe to have on hand for all your fall and winter baking needs.
All you have to do is mix cinnamon, nutmeg, allspice and cardamom together. Easy peasy.
Some recipes call for only cinnamon, nutmeg and allspice with a pinch of cloves but I like the addition of cardamom. It’s one of the most underused spices – a real shame because it’s lovely combined with cinnamon – it has the same warm notes.
Of course you can leave out the cardamom if you don’t have it on hand and add a pinch of cloves instead or just use the first three in your mix. A couple of pinches of ginger is nice too.
Homemade apple pie spice also makes a great holiday or hostess gift packaged in a pretty jar and tied with a festive ribbon.
Here’s my homemade pumpkin pie spice too in case you missed it. Never run out of either again!
