Homemade Healthier Big Macs

Homemade Big Macs that taste just like the originals, only infinitely better! Two all beef patties, special sauce, lettuce, cheese, pickles, onions on a sesame seed bun. . . right out of your very own kitchen. Healthier and fresher because you control the ingredients.

This is a lighter version adapted from the Dr. Oz show that doesn’t sacrifice on taste even though it’s much lower in fat than the fast food version. The patties are made with lean ground beef, smothered with 2% American cheese and nestled inside light whole wheat buns.

The special sauce is light mayonnaise and light french dressing combined with pickle relish and onions. I could eat it with a spoon. It’s one of the best parts.

Six or seven years ago Big Macs paved the way to my heart. Eating 2 a week, sometimes more, with extra sauce (oh, how I love that sauce! Let me count the ways. . .) was a part of my life. I am proud to say the closest I get to fast food today is Panera.

Of course you can use the full fat versions of the ingredients if you’re so inclined – I used full fat French dressing because the low-fat kind had high fructose corn syrup. Blech. That’s a trade I’m not willing to make. I couldn’t find sesame seed buns so I used soft, light buns and didn’t miss the sesame seeds at all.

Sometimes I still dream of Big Macs, so I’m beyond thrilled that I can make my own now!

Everyone who ate one said they tasted like the real things, only better. The sauce really makes it and brings the recognizable flavor Big Macs are loved for. If, like me, you prefer extra sauce, double the recipe.

Homemade Healthier Big Macs

Homemade Big Macs that taste just like the originals, only infinitely better because they're fresher and healthier!

Ingredients:

Big Mac for One:
burger:
1/4 pound extra lean ground beef
salt and pepper
olive oil
2 slices 2% American cheese
1 + 1/2 light whole wheat sesame seed buns (2 bottoms, 1 top)
1 teaspoon onion, finely diced
1/2 cup lettuce, cut in thin shreds
dill pickles
*sauce:
1/8 cup low-fat mayonnaise
1 tablespoon low-fat French dressing
1 teaspoon sweet pickle relish
3/4 teaspoon minced onion
1/4 teaspoon white vinegar
dash of salt
Big Macs for four:
burgers:
1 pound extra lean ground beef
salt and pepper
olive oil
8 slices 2% American cheese
6 whole wheat light sesame seed buns
1/4 cup onion, finely diced
2 cups lettuce, cut in thin shreds
dill pickles
*sauce:
1/2 cup low-fat mayonnaise
4 tablespoons low-fat French dressing
4 teaspoons sweet pickle relish
3 teaspoons minced onion
1 teaspoon white vinegar
couple dashes of salt

Instructions:

  1. In a small bowl make the sauce by whisking mayonnaise, dressing, relish, vinegar, onion and a dash of salt together. Taste and adjust if needed to your liking by adding more dressing, relish or onion.
  2. Form the ground beef into two thin patties. Season with salt and pepper. Grease a skillet with olive oil and cook patties over medium heat about 2 minutes on each side. Add a slice of cheese to each patty and melt. Remove from heat.
  3. To assemble burger slather half the sauce over one of the bottom buns, sprinkle with half the onion, top with lettuce, a burger patty, pickles then another bottom bun; repeat and finish with the top bun.

    Sounds great! Though I’d go for the full-fat products and skip the bun. I usually prepare the sauce recipe from “Fast Food Fix” but I’ll have to give yours a try!
