Dear 86 Calorie Fudge Brownies,
Where were you when I was stuffing my face with chocolate chip brownie cupcakes? Or those chocolate cloud cookies bigger than the palm of my hand?
I’m forever trying to appease that stubborn sweet tooth of mine. It’s never satisfied. I wish I knew you then.
With such wholesome ingredients like wheat flour, olive oil and applesauce plus honey to replace the refined sugar some may say you are too good to be true. I would tell them they’re wrong.
Thank goodness you taste positively dreamy. Like rich, fudgy chocolate and not apples.
I confess I may have cheated by adding walnuts and chocolate chips. I mistakenly thought you would taste bad. I was trying to “fix” you. It’s nearly impossible to fix something so perfect. Now I know.
Even with my additions you weigh in at a mere 136 calories. How can one go wrong?
To my surprise I found you every bit as addicting as full fat, full sugar brownies. I can’t quit you.
Thank-you 86 calorie brownies for coming into my life.
My brownie-loving chocoholic heart is yours. Forever.
Your hopelessly devoted friend,
Cinnamon Girl xoxo
Low calorie fudge brownies with wholesome ingredients like wheat flour, olive oil and honey.
INGREDIENTS:
INSTRUCTIONS:
- Preheat oven to 350°F. Line an 8x8 baking pan with parchment and spray with olive oil.
- Measure the honey into a deep-sided small bowl and microwave on high power 45 seconds. Whisk in the cocoa powder and let cool.
- Meanwhile in a small bowl whisk the flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt together.
- In a large bowl whisk applesauce, oil, egg, and vanilla together until well combined. Whisk in the cooled honey-cocoa mixture until smooth. Add the flour mixture and stir until all the flour is incorporated. Stir in the walnuts and chocolate chips if using.
- Add the batter to the prepared pan and spread out evenly. Bake until the surface looks dry around the edges and a toothpick in the center comes out with a few moist crumbs clinging to it, about 25 minutes or 30 minutes if you added walnuts and chocolate chips. Don't over bake.
- Cool the pan on a wire rack. Once cool refrigerate for 20-30 minutes. Remove the brownies using the parchment to a cutting board and slice into 16 squares. For clean cuts wipe the knife clean after each cut and dip in hot water. Store in an airtight container in a cool place 3-4 days.
Notes:
86 calories each without walnuts and chocolate chips, 136 calories with walnuts and chocolate chips

These are SO delicious! I just made some to take to an event with my Bfs family! I know they’re going to love them! I do have a question, do you know what the full nutrition facts are with the chocolate chips and walnuts? Thanks!!
Thanks Gabrielle! I hope everyone liked them! They’re 136 calories with the chocolate chips & nuts. 🙂
I made them today and my family and I ate all of them in one hour. I had about four of these great tasting brownies.
That’s great Maureen! Glad they turned out well! 🙂
Hi, can you suggest a substitute for egg. Being veg would like to try an eggless version. Thanks
You can try one of these! http://www.thekitchn.com/5-vegan-substitutes-for-eggs-in-baking-tips-from-the-kitchn-136591
Best recipe thank you so much! 🙂 I have made these many times and always turn out awesome!
Thanks Ashley! I’m so glad you’re enjoying them!! 🙂
These are good, I added two servings (120 chips) of lily’s chocolate chips. Letting them cool now, then topping with whip cream for tonight’s dessert! Thanks for the recipe”)
Thanks Chris! I’m glad they turned out well! 🙂
Can I sub honey for rice malt syrup? Would the amount be the same?
I think that would work out OK Sarah! Rice malt syrup isn’t as sweet as honey but I wouldn’t want you to add more because they might turn out too mushy.
They’re in the oven now, while I count up calories.
2 inch brownies is superbly small, so I’m going to say I’ll cut about 9 decent sized brownies instead of 16. And if they’re decent sized like I’m going to cut them, then HOLY CRAP… 329 calories each.
They just came out of the oven a few minutes ago… Boy do they taste great.
Note: All caloric ingredients added up to 2,962. Divided by 16 = 185.12 calories each (THAT’S WITH PECANS AND CHOCOLATE CHIPS). 329 calories if you cut then into 9 brownies instead.
Thanks for making the brownies Jennifer! Where are you getting your calorie calculations from – it sounds high? I did it on calorie count and without the nut/chips they’re 83 calories each.
These look good, but can i use regular baking powder?
Thanks Priya! Yes!
These were Good! Although I added an additional 1/4 cup of white flour as I found the batter a bit soupy, the brownies came out great.
Monica.
Thanks Monica! Good save! I’m glad they turned out well! 🙂
These were good but not enough of chicolate taste. The honey was also too overwhelming.
Thanks for making them and for your feedback!
Can I substitute 1/3 cup organic brown sugar and 1/3 cup coconut sugar. I do not use honey for baking.
Thanks
I don’t know if that would work out well because the honey gives it moisture. If you do try it please let me know how it goes.
Where is the egg in the ingredients? I am assuming only 1?
Yes! Just one! It’s listed – 2nd ingredient from the bottom.
Reenie, these brownies look delish! I’m thinking ~Chocolate-Mint Flavored Chips & black walnuts~ in mine. Thanks for sharing! 🙂
Thanks Becky! Sound like an irresistible combo!! 🙂
Hi Renee, I’ve been looking and looking for the perfect low fat brownie recipe and I think this is it! I love the idea of honey instead of sugar. The reviews were awesome too. I might add a little but more cocoa, but thank you so much for this recipe! You rock 😀
Thank-you! Love the idea of adding more cocoa! I’ll have to try it on my next batch. Too much chocolate is never a bad thing!
can i use something else instead of applesauce ? i want to make it to my sister , she is on a diet , but she allergic .. btw i love this brownies thier amazing!
xoxo
kimberly
Hi Kimberly! I’m so happy that you like the brownies! I make them almost every weekend! You could try some greek yogurt or even light sour cream (not non-fat) in place of the applesauce! Can your sister eat yogurt? Let me know if that works otherwise I can figure out something else to make it work. Have a good weekend!
yes she can ! im gonna try this today! thank you so much!
I made these last night, Ill admit I was pleasantly surprised. I didn’t throw in any nuts (I didn’t have any) I was just shy of 2/3 Orange Blossom Honey…and by nature added a tad more CoaCoa Powder…I tasted a lil too much of the honey for my liking. But the texture was very nice. I also subbed the olive oil/spray I replaced the oil with 2Tblsp Vanilla Greek Yogurt & just dabbed a tiny bit of Coconut Oil on a napkin and prepared the pan. Im not sure that my boyfriend will dig the flavor as is so for him Im making a not so skinny Chocolate icing LOL but I will definitely make these again. I think Ill cut the honey down by 1/3 cup and definite add some nuts! 🙂 Thanks for sharing!!
Hi Reeni!
I would like to makes these brownies today but your ingredient list doesn’t mention the eggs, so how many eggs does this call for?
Thanks,
Pamela
Hi Pamela! It’s listed! Second ingredient from the bottom – one egg, at room temperature. Enjoy!
Hi Reeni,
Wow, I don’t know how I could have missed that!
I just made these brownies and honestly they are the best I have made so far, so delicious. I made it completely vegan, used ground flax seed simmered in water instead of eggs, I also added more applesauce to replace the oil and used half the quantity of honey it called for. I am so excited, I loved it and my roommate who isn’t vegan loves it too! The only problem now is that I will definitely over indulge, anyway that doesn’t happen so often 🙂
Thank you Reeni!
That’s so great to hear Pamela! I really love them too – make them all the time when I want a treat without a lot of calories. . . but like you I tend to eat too many of them! They’re almost too good. Thanks for making them!
I’ve made these a few times and love them! My 15 year old son like these brownies better than the ones I used to make!
Thanks Felicia! I like them just as much as regular brownies too!
i have to make these. thanks reeni!
omg, i have to try these! they look fantastic!
Any tips for storing them? Can they be frozen?
Hi Morgan! You can freeze them!
These were actually pretty amazing for being healthy! I was skeptical at first but decided to try since I’m trying to watch my sugar & carb intake but HAD to do something for my sweet tooth craving! Thanks for sharing this recipe. I too added dark choc chips & walnuts. Yum!!! My husbands friend even tried them tonight & didn’t know they were “healthy” until I told him!
is it 86 calories per brownie? or for the entire thing?
Per brownie!!
Sooooo good. I made them this week with white chocolate chips and walnuts, and made them again today with walnuts only, for a family get together, wich some of my family members are diabetic. I better bring the recipe with me…
Thanks Helene! White chocolate chips and walnuts sound heavenly! Happy 4th!
I think I’m in love….can’t wait to try these.
This is quite similar to our recipe — but I love that it uses honey 🙂 I’ll certainly give it a try, and you can bet I’ll add dark chocolate chips to mine too!
Moist with chunks of nuts and chocolate…I can’t believe that these are low cal!!
YUM, i cannot believe they are low in calories!
Sigh. I wish they had low cal blondies or oatmeal bars or something for us allergic folks.
I’ll try to find something for you!
Oh my heavens! These look scrumptious! I need to make these asap. Especially for all the little ones in my life. Kids need less sugar. Adults too! Thank you for sharing!
Wow!!! I soooo need these in my life, lol. Actually, I could go for one right now and I think by the end of the day I will have definitely whipped up a batch. 86 calories is amazing!
Dear Reeni, Satisfying and delicious and figure friendly how delightfully perfect. They do look delicious. Blessings dearest. Catherine xoxo
An ode to brownies. And guilt free ones to boot! Are you talking or giving lessons to duckie? She just did an ode to a pink noodle, lol…

Choc Chip Uru
Brownies without guilt?!?! It looks like a dream 🙂 But pictures speak for themselves, I’m mouthwatering!!! You are amazing dear, thanks for sharing this heavenly goodness. Bye, have a great day
Can’t believe each just contains 86 Calorie…really? These fudge brownies look so dang rich…yet so light. Marvelous!
These brownies look amazing, hard to believe they don’t have more calories.
Brownies without guilt? I certainly need these! 🙂 Thanks Reeni!
Purrs to handsome Moon!
Oh, sign my name to that letter – those look insanely good! But that just means I can eat two. Right? Jillian would probably say no, but… ;P
86 calorie brownies?!?! Am I dreaming?? These are insane! And I thought my skinny peanut butter swirl brownies from my post on Sunday were healthy! These trump those! Amazing Reeni, simply AMAZING!
Must make these. But must not eat entire pan. Defeats the purpose.
These brownies look delicious! I am going to give them a try this week.
Thanks Steph! I hope you like them as much as I!
Could you substitute the honey with agave syrup if you are following a vegan diet? Most recipes I’ve seen say you can easily swap out the honey with agave because both are sweet.
This recipe looks really good and I’m always looking for new brownie recipes! Now I can add a low-cal one to my repertoire…I’ve got a really good gluten-free version, but it’s high in refined sugars, :(.
Hi Maggie! I’m sure that would work out fine! I’ll be making them again soon and will use agave – I’ll update the recipe when I do. If you make them please let me know how they turn out. Have a good night!
Thank you!!!! These are definitely going on my list!
Thank you for posting these. I’ve tried many low calorie brownies and not a fan. I love JM so am going to give them a try!
